AN URBAN AND INDUSTRIAL DESIGN INSPIRED BY THE SUBWAY
SHANGHAI DESIGN TOUR

Visited many times for a store or design tour, Shanghai is always an opportunity to discover the latest trends in retail design. The financial capital of mainland China abounds in shops with a sharp and elaborate design. Designed to attract a demanding consumer in search of novelty, they must stand out with innovative concepts and careful merchandising. It is today in the area of the former French concession that we will explore a new concept.

A DISTANT INSPIRATION FOR A LOCAL CONCEPT

In November 2019, the Hong Yiling streetwear brand CANAL ST inaugurates its new concept in Shanghai on 400 m2. Conceived by local designers, Sò Studio, the retail design of the point of sale is inspired by the atmosphere of the Big Apple. The designer, who studied at the famous Parson School of Design in New York, is perhaps the source of the design.

AN SMART RENOVATION, RESPECTFUL OF THE ORIGINAL BUILDING

Sets of materials, rough concrete walls, metal beams… Many elements of the original structure have been integrated into the design.

They are a reminder of the mix of different styles found right here in New York: industrial era, pop culture, avant-garde fashion, and so on.

AN INVENTIVE DESIGN THAT IS IMMEDIATELY RECOGNIZABLE

However, the designers touched the structure by moving the staircase. For example, the old ground floor stairwell has been transformed into a hall whose design is in the style of the New York subway.

Metal beams scattered throughout the store are also reminiscent of subway bars. And illuminated displays are covered with metal grilles reminiscent of the air vents on New York streets.

A unique concept that recalls the origins of streetwear while conveying an image of street culture. Just as the brand seeks to mix Western and Asian influences, the retail designers have mixed the historical building typical of the district with New York influences.

Shanghai is home to many other exceptional and imaginative concepts. And it’s not just the concept stores that stand out for their design. In the optics sector, too, stores compete with each other in inventiveness to renew the customer experience. The Japanese brand JINS, for example, has taken a gamble on minimalism.
